Moral incongruence and addiction: A registered report
The new diagnosis of compulsive sexual behavior disorder in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases specifically notes that distress related to moral objections about sexual behavior should not be taken as a symptom of the disorder. The present work demonstrates that this caveat is important, as moral beliefs about sexual behavior do influence whether people feel they are addicted to sexual behaviors. However, the present study shows that these moral beliefs also influence feelings of addiction to gambling and, potentially, other addictive behaviors.
